Target Audience: Everyone at Strathclyde
Janice was born in Dumfries and educated at Dumfries Academy, a state-funded grammar school with an excellent Art Department.
The daughter of a plumber-cum-soldier-cum-ratcatcher and a plough-woman who worked in the Women's Land Army, Janice was the first in her family to enter higher education. She graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 1984 winning the Newbery Medal for the best graduating student across all Schools.
In 1986, she was awarded a Royal Society of Arts bursary to study animation in Los Angeles. The same year, while studying as a postgraduate, she co-founded Graven with her architect husband Ross Hunter. At that time Scotland had no international design businesses. Graven's studio is located in the Glasgow City Innovation District. The business, now in its fourth decade, continues the city’s 260-year design legacy, with an international blue chip client list and projects in over 40 countries.
In addition to her work as a designer, strategist and activist, Janice is a broadcaster, curator, writer and lecturer on design, transformative innovation and the economic value of ideas, culture, places and communities. For six years she was a Trustee of NESTA, Chairing its £20M Innovation seed fund. For 10 years she was a founding Trustee and Chair of The Lighthouse – Europe’s largest Design and Architecture Centre. She now leads the Creative Economy workstream for the Glasgow Economic Leadership and is involved in the development of a design-led, advanced manufacturing project for the city.
