Target Audience: For research staff and early career academics starting out in research bidding and design. Individuals from other staff categories may also find this class useful if they are intending to apply for research funding.

This class provides a unique opportunity for staff with no, or little, experience of research bidding and design to develop an understanding of the funding landscape, design initial questions and develop a small funding proposal appropriate to their career stage.

Participants will undertake a range of activities within the workshop seminars and outside of the classroom to both explore the research funding landscape and begin designing a research project funding proposal of their own.

Topics covered will be:

  • Overview of writing funding proposals, an introduction to funders and funding application and decision processes.
  • Funding proposal structures and sections - what should (and shouldn't) be included.
  • How to create a useful grant proposal plan – considerations and structure.
  • Examination of successful applications
  • Overview of Strathclyde specific resources and support
  • Exploration, creation and development of project ideas

 

Oct 7th Session 1:

Introduction to grants (whistle-stop tour) – the good, the bad and the basic

Strategy: aligning your goals, research vision and expertise to the funder (seeing the broader scope beyond target application)


Oct 21st Session 2: 

Concept of idea, idea pitch, mind map and lay summary (accessible and clear science)

 

Nov 4th Session 3: 

Proposal planning and development of ideas (construction of a clear narrative aligned to your hypothesis and aims)

 

Nov 18th Session 4: 

Showcasing impact (building in demonstrable impact across key stakeholders) and overview of how proposals may be reviewed at panel

 

Dec 2nd Session 5: 

Costing proposals, data management and funders landscape (practical skills from external speakers)

Prerequisites

You must submit an online application prior to attending this class to be fully registered. A minimum of 4 sessions must be attended. Please check all session dates before booking.

Cancellation Policy

When applying for a course, you should note that there will be a £50* to your department if you cancel within 5** working days or you do not attend, and a £25 charge for cancellations/ non-attendance between 6 and 10 working days. There will be no charge for cancellation made 10 or more working days before the event. Notifications should be made to OSDU@strath.ac.uk

A department is welcome to send someone else in your place if they wish without incurring a charge, providing that person has the necessary pre-requisites for the course. In the case of courses split over more than one day, you must attend ALL parts of the course. If you fail to attend any part you will be charged as outlined above.

*This is the standard charge for cancellation or non-attendance of course of 1 days duration or less. For some courses there may be a higher cancellation charge and if this is the case you will be advised of this at the time of booking.

**Any bookings made within 10 days of the event will incur the charges as specified.
