Target Audience: PhD Students, Staff, Researchers.

This session will focus on understanding publication related metrics, and how are they calculated. We will showcase the metrics available in Scopus and how metrics can be applied and monitored for developing publication strategies, understanding your performance, and identifying key leading researchers in your field of research.

Some specific topics that will be covered include:

Journal metrics: Impact Factor (IF), CiteScore, SNIP & SJR.

  • How to find an above average journal in your research area
  • What is considered to be a good CiteScore or IF for a journal
  • How to compare journals using different metrics

Author level metrics: H-index.

  • Often requested as part of researcher profile information and why it should be used with caution.

Article level metrics / Alternative metrics:

  • PlumX Metrics: A range of indicators covering usage (views and click throughs), captures (e.g. reference managers) mentions and (blogs, news, comments, reviews, wikipedia) social media.
  • Field Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI): Have your papers been cited more than would be expected based on the world average for similar publications?
  • Percentile Benchmark: It complements the FWCI by indicating which percentile a paper falls within, with respect to the number of citations it has received
