Target Audience: Postgraduate Research Students
Effective leadership skills and the ability to support productive collaboration in a team are not only required by those already in a formal leadership role. Any PhD student, looking towards embarking on their professional journey after PhD, whether in academic or commercial research or any other field, will benefit from understanding and being able to demonstrate the characteristics of good leadership. Understanding how to develop effective teamworking, whether as team leader or from within a team, will allow individuals to get things done, in the service of the team’s objectives and their own personal goals, and in order to enhance their career progression.
In this course participants will learn a range of well-established leadership frameworks in order to understand what makes good leadership. Learning the DiSC® behavioural framework allows identification of personal strengths and preferences and provide the opportunity to relate these to desired leadership qualities and assess their leadership development needs. In addition they will understand the characteristics of effective teams, and learn practical techniques to support team development and well-functioning collaboration that can be used during their PhD and beyond. Drawing also on the DiSC® framework, they will learn techniques to motivate and influence team members, in order to ensure individuals and the team are committed to teamwork and joint objectives. They will also learn how to avoid the potential obstacles to effective teamworking by reducing conflict and miscommunication.
This 2-day online course will use interactive methods, individual reflective activities, online groupwork and Q&A sessions to ensure students remain engaged and energised. The course can be delivered as two consecutive or two separate days – or as four separate half-days – to suit the needs of the participant group.
By the end of this 2-day webinar participants will have:
- Learned a range of leadership models and used them to identify and plan to enhance their personal leadership abilities
- Learned the DiSC® behavioural profile framework and used it to identify their personal behavioural style, its strengths, motivations, limitations and development needs, and create a self-assessed Leadership Development Profile
- Reflected on the nature of successful teams and learned a range of models to understand and effectively manage or participate in productive teamworking
- Used the DiSC® framework in order to devise effective strategies for motivating and communicating with individual team members
- Learned how to develop positive team dynamics in order to maximise effective collaboration and play to team strengths
- Considered how to reduce the obstacles to good teamworking, by avoiding conflict and miscommunication
