To celebrate International Women's Day, staff and students are invited to an event on Friday, 20 March 2015.
In the UK, 22% of Professors are female, 22.8% of FTSE 100 board members are women and 13% of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) employees are female.
This year's IWD theme is "Make it Happen". A range of speakers will be discussing their own career journeys as well as their thoughts on actions which can be taken to speed up progress in the career advancement of women in higher education and industry. The event will also examine how to increase female representation in STEM areas, where they remain under represented.

11:00: Equate Scotland
Geraldine Wooley
Equate Scotland is Scotland's expert in gender equality in science, engineering, technology and the built environment. Geraldine will look at some of the barriers facing women in higher education and industry and suggest practical solutions to enable women studying and working in these keys sectors to develop, by supporting their recruitment, retention and progression.
11:30: Aurora Women's Leadership Development
Dr Maeve Lankford, LFHE and Dr Alison Reith and Dr Kirsty Ross, Strathclyde Aurora participants Aurora is the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education's women's leadership development programme, developed in response to research which shows that women are under-represented in senior leadership positions internationally and identifies actions that could be taken to change this.
Dr Maeve Lankford will discuss actions which institutions can take to make things happen while Dr Alison Reith and Dr Kirsty Ross will talk about their own experiences as participants on the Aurora programme.

12:30: Girls into Science Project, Malawi
Paul Chambers
Paul Chambers will talk about a British Council funded research collaboration between The University of Malawi and the University of Strathclyde to encourage girls to study science, technology, engineering and maths (the STEM subjects) at university level.
13:00: Increasing Women's and Girls' Participation in STEM
Dr Susie Mitchell, Programme Director, Glasgow City of Science
Susie has had a 17 year career in research, R&D commercialisation, health improvement policy and equality work.
A PhD graduate in leukaemia research, she joined Glasgow City of Science in 2013 after working for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games organising committee and is a keen advocate for increasing women's participation in STEM.
13:30 Women in the Technology Industry
Ishbell MacPhail, DELL
Ishbell will discuss what companies and industry can do to encourage women to enter and succeed in the technology industry.
14:15: Professors Panel
Prof. Helen Grant (Biomedical Engineering), Prof. Eva Hevia (Pure & Applied Chemistry), Prof. Lisa Woolfson (Psychological & Health Sciences)
A panel of female Strathclyde professors will discuss their own career journeys and thoughts on what practical actions universities can take to speed up change and achieve better representation both in subject areas where women are traditionally underrepresented and at senior levels.
