Target Audience: Postgraduate Research Students

Description:

A doctorate is about becoming an independent researcher. This is about mastery in your discipline, but it is also about developing other skills. In this training day we will explore the core skills required to be successful, including focussing specifically on:

  • Understanding the nature and requirements of a doctorate
  • Effective project management of you and your research
  • Time management and task prioritisation; and,
  • Developing a strong and effective supervisory relationship through managing your supervisor

There will be two linked sessions, on consecutive days. Hence, you’ll be encouraged to spend the afternoon of the first day thinking about ideas to implement from the morning’s learning.

Overall, the aim is for you to lay the foundations for an effective doctoral experience, and to work with colleagues who are at a similar stage - to share ideas, and to have the chance to have a chat, a whinge, and a laugh! There will be discussions, and plenty of scope to ask questions and receive feedback. It would be ideal if you have a web-cam, but audio (speakers/headphones & microphone) are the bare minimum so that you can take part in the discussions, and the group work.

  • Begin to develop research skills relating to the interpersonal, project management and self-management aspects of undertaking their research
  • Develop PhD/research project planning
  • Develop effective working practices
  • Know how to work with others in the research environment
  • Know how to maximise their impact
  • Know how to manage their Supervisor
  • Make the most of their PhD - planning for the future.
