Target Audience: Staff in academic, technical and professional job families who are involved or interested in the delivery and/or support of teaching, learning and assessment
Background
Digital storytelling is a powerful 21st century tool for contextualising knowledge in different disciplines.
At their simplest, digital stories are narratives that draw on a range of multimedia and web technologies to enable staff and students to view, tell and re-tell stories about a particular topic or discipline.
In this way, digital storytelling can support teaching, learning and assessment. Digital stories can be authored and narrated by teachers, students, or co-created.
Research suggests that digital stories raise students’ interest and motivation towards a course, promote deep and active learning, and allow them to experience and develop a range of 21st century literacy skills.
While some make use of professional recording equipment, scripts and actors, most digital stories are created using simple, mobile technologies like phones and tablets.
This Workshop
The purpose of this workshop is to provide staff with an opportunity to reflect on how digital storytelling could enhance students’ experience of their courses.
As well as exploring pedagogic principles, presenters will share practical examples of how digital storytelling has been successfully implemented at Strathclyde, including our programme of MOOCs, undergraduate teaching in the department of CIS, and staff development courses.
The workshop will provide adequate opportunity for staff to develop their own ideas, know where they can turn to for practical advice, and how they can support one another as part of an ongoing network.
Like all activities on The Strathclyde Teaching Excellence Programme (STEP), the workshop is designed to directly support and align with the strategic ambitions of the University by promoting and encouraging innovation and excellence in teaching and to act as a catalyst to grow networks and collaborative working across the institution.
