Is this course right for me?

Target Audience: Academic/Research Staff - all levels

This session will provide an overview of the current situation of the UK in EU funding programmes such as Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+. It will include information about the Joint Report from December 2017 and the recently announced post-exit guarantee extension for EU projects, among other things.  Blazej Thomas, European Adviser at the UK Research Office (UKR) will deliver the session. 

The Joint Report from the negotiators of the European Union and the UK Government, issued on 8 December 2018, covers the progress made during phase 1 of the Brexit negotiations.  This Report includes a number of ‘agreements in principle’, including one that should allow UK entities continued eligibility to participation in Horizon 2020 and other Union programmes financed under the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).  Attendees will hear more about the Joint Report and implications for UK participation in EU programmes. 

In addition, attendees will also hear about the UK Treasury Guarantee, issued in August 2016.  This guarantee means that, in the unlikely event of a ‘no deal Brexit’, the government has committed to underwrite Horizon 2020 funding for all successful UK bids submitted before exit.  The recent extension of this guaranteed will be discussed.   

Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions of Blazej Thomas and representatives of the International Team in RKES.  UKRO, the European Office of the UK Research Councils based in Brussels, provides expert advice on EU funding for research, innovation and higher education.  

This session is aimed as staff across all disciplines and will be particularly suited to any staff currently involved in or planning involvement in EU programmes.  

As a result of the session, participants will:

• Have an understanding of the current position for UK organisations with respect to applying for EU funding.
• Hear key messages from the European Commission and the UK Government.
• Receive additional clarification on the HM Treasury’s guarantee to underwrite the payment of H2020 awards (for proposals submitted whilst the UK is still part of the EU).

When applying for a course, you should note that there will be a £50* to your department if you cancel within 5** working days or you do not attend, and a £25 charge for cancellations/ non-attendance between 6 and 10 working days. There will be no charge for cancellation made 10 or more working days before the event. Notifications should be made to OSDU@strath.ac.uk

A department is welcome to send someone else in your place if they wish without incurring a charge, providing that person has the necessary pre-requisites for the course. In the case of courses split over more than one day, you must attend ALL parts of the course. If you fail to attend any part you will be charged as outlined above.

*This is the standard charge for cancellation or non-attendance of course of 1 days duration or less. For some courses there may be a higher cancellation charge and if this is the case you will be advised of this at the time of booking.
