Is this course right for me?
Target Audience: Postgraduate Research Students
The challenge of creating momentum and structure for the duration of a PhD, which is often characterised by long periods of independent work, demands effective, resilient time management skills. PhD students may find themselves careering between periods of drifting and stressful deadline driven overwork. Students often feel overwhelmed and rudderless, and may struggle to make the most of their time. Despite its challenges, PhD study can provide the opportunity to develop time management habits that will make it easier to use your time more effectively and feel more in control of your work, increasing productivity and reducing stress.
In this online course, participants will firstly learn their personal time management style, and understand how to work with this to avoid the factors that may have undermined their ability to manage their time to date. Instead, they will learn how to work with their personal tendencies and develop time management approaches specific to their personal needs.
They will learn techniques to plan their time, use their calendars and prioritise their work in order to make the best of their time on a daily, weekly and long-term basis. They will also explore techniques to reduce procrastination.
The course will use interactive exercises, personal reflection and Q&A to ensure participants remain engaged and interested. Participants will have the chance to apply the techniques to their own workload throughout, ensuring they leave the course already better equipped to make the most of their time.
By the end of this full day webinar participants will have:
- Learned how to recognise their Time Management Style and understood how best to manage their time, in line with their style
- Learned techniques to plan their time in the short and longer term, in order to keep on top of their PhD work and objectives
- Considered how to maintain flexibility in their planning, in order to stay on track in the face of the unexpected obstacles or changes that can otherwise derail PhD study
- Learned a prioritisation framework to make best use of their time at any point during the PhD
- Understood what sits behind acute and chronic procrastination, and learned tips and tricks to get moving again
- Applied all the course content directly to their current workload and circumstances in order to ensure they can immediately implement the techniques and improve their time management
