This workshop will explore a technological approach to delivering a class, using a system developed in the CIS department.

The system hosts many aspects of the delivery process, integrating teaching materials with video content and machine-assessed online exercises. It also facilitates assessment tasks which are mediated partly by computer and partly on paper in a way that allows all the marking to be done online.

Feedback is a dialogue, delivered in two phases:  generic feedback is delivered immediately, with specimen solutions (often in video form) acting as the cue to a reflection and  self-assessment exercise; individual feedback comes later, and is delivered much more efficiently with assistance from the machine and input from the students. The technology has its rough edges but may prompt the imagination, and the approach is broadly reproducible.

Participants will experience all the staff and student roles involved in a class built this way, as we shall develop, attend, examine and assess our own class in the course of the afternoon.

They will be enabled to:

  • Design teaching materials with integrated interactive content
  • Use rapid feedback from students to inform teaching
  • Design assessment tasks which combine computer and paper components, and are efficiently assessable
