Is this course right for me?

Target Audience: Staff who have undertaken both the half day and the one day GBV courses offered by OSDU

The University’s Gender-based Violence Policy outlines its commitment to supporting members of the campus community who have experienced any form of GBV.  GBV can include domestic abuse, rape and sexual assault, stalking and harassment including online.  Experiencing or recovering from GBV can have a detrimental impact on a person’s ability to work or study.  The University can be a vital source of support for students and staff who are experiencing or have experienced GBV both on and off campus. Making a first disclosure about GBV is a very brave step and is not one which is undertaken lightly.

This course will help build the University’s capacity to deliver GBV training and to ensure that those responding to GBV disclosures have the knowledge and skills needed to respond effectively. The course is led by GBV specialists from Glasgow & Clyde Rape Crisis Centre and will include discussion, exploring scenarios and case studies.

By the end of the two day workshop participants will have the skills and knowledge to enable them to deliver two GBV courses with the following aims:

• To ensure trainees have a clear understanding of the term ‘gender based violence’ and why it’s important to have a gendered understanding of this issue
• Gaining an understanding of the short and long term impacts of gender based violence and how this can affect both students and staff
• Understanding why survivors delay disclosing incidents of gender based violence and responding to those disclosures when they happen
• Understanding the effects of trauma and mental health, self harming behaviours and how judgemental attitudes can affect how and when disclosures are made
• Understanding the importance of the ‘first response’ when a disclosure is made
• Understanding the damage done by victim blaming attitudes and statements
• Being aware of services and referral pathways

Prerequisites

Cancellation Policy

When applying for a course, you should note that there will be a £50* to your department if you cancel within 5** working days or you do not attend, and a £25 charge for cancellations/ non-attendance between 6 and 10 working days. There will be no charge for cancellation made 10 or more working days before the event. Notifications should be made to OSDU@strath.ac.uk

A department is welcome to send someone else in your place if they wish without incurring a charge, providing that person has the necessary pre-requisites for the course. In the case of courses split over more than one day, you must attend ALL parts of the course. If you fail to attend any part you will be charged as outlined above.

*This is the standard charge for cancellation or non-attendance of course of 1 days duration or less. For some courses there may be a higher cancellation charge and if this is the case you will be advised of this at the time of booking.

**Any bookings made within 10 days of the event will incur the charges as specified.
