Is this course right for me?
Target Audience: Staff involved in delivering undergraduate teaching in the form of lectures.
Peer Instruction is an educational technique that puts students at the centre of the learning process. It is a modification of a flipped classroom that challenges students with conceptual tests, which are solved alone and then in small group discussion. Staff can use web-based polling tools such as mentimeter.com to measure student responses. The method is both quick and effective, and can dramatically enhance student understanding and knowledge retention when used as part of a traditional lecture. Students gain the same benefits as an interactive tutorial, but Peer Instruction can benefit every participant in a very large group.
This session is run by Patrick Thomson, a teaching staff member in the department of Pure & Applied Chemistry, who has been using Peer Instruction in his own lectures for a number of years.

The session will include some theoretical background, but will focus on the “how-to” of Peer Instruction, with practical strategies, software tools, and potential pitfalls. Participants will have an opportunity to create their own resources during the session. All participants will need to bring a smartphone, tablet, or laptop computer to be able to participate fully in the session activity.
